Jessie is a member of the workplace and litigation teams. She has a broad range of experience across employment matters, workers compensation, professional indemnity, personal injury and public liability.

Background

Jessie regularly appears as both instructing solictor and counsel in the State Courts, SAET, SACAT, Australian Human Rights Commission, Fair Work Commission, Equal Opportunity Commission, Federal Court and Federal Circuit Court.

Her practice covers the full spectrum of issues arising from employment including industrial, work health and safety, insurance, defamation and worker’s compensation.

Jessie specialises in complex matters where different areas of law intersect. Her depth of knowledge across workplace, insurance and litigation means that she is able to unpick complex matters which give rise to claims across different areas of law and jurisdictions.

Before joining Finlaysons, at the beginning of 2019, Jessie worked for South Australia’s Crown Solicitor’s Office as a solicitor in their civil litigation section providing advice and court advocacy in civil matters.

Jessie believes that communication is key. She has a calm and pragmatic approach, and views challenges from a problem-solving perspective. With her thorough knowledge of the legal process and her ability to effectively communicate with clients and the other side, Jessie has a reputation for achieving favourable outcomes for her clients.

Experience

Jessie is chair of the non-for-profit, Northern Community Legal Service as well as a management committee member for the SA Australian Insurance Lawyers Association and the Women Lawyers Association SA.

Jessie’s recent experience includes:

  • Conduct to defend of high-profile claim in the Federal Court brought against a national company in relation to the application of workplace policies and termination of contract.
  • Acting for various clients in relation to defamation matters including claims arising from electronic publications and social media.
  • Acting as counsel in contested applications in the SAET, Magistrates Court and District Court.
  • Acting for employers in relation disputes surrounding termination of employment including concurrent claims for general protections, worker’s compensation and underpayment claims.
  • Acting for self-insured employers and employers in defending worker’s compensation claims as well as concurrent discrimination claims.
  • Conduct of originating application in the inherent jurisdiction of the Supreme Court relating to scheme critical issues for a CTP insurer and instruction King’s Counsel in relation to the same.
  • Acted for employers and insurers in relation to recoveries pursuant to s 66 of the Return to Work Act 2014.
