A TICKET TO RIDE: What is ESG and what does it mean for your wine business?
For wineries of all sizes, addressing environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations is not an option – it is your “ticket to ride”.
Your major wine buyers, as well as your distributors, suppliers, employees, shareholders, bankers and insurers, are going to want to deal with organizations that meet certain ESG standards in the future. If you don’t stack up, you will be left on the shelf.
So what actually is ESG and what does it mean for your wine business? What will you have to do – practically?
Each year, Finlaysons and their friends, Australian Grape & Wine and Wine Australia, visit ten or eleven leading viticultural regions of Australia to impart their legal and commercial wine industry knowledge to winemakers and grape growers. This year they will endeavour to give some deep insights into what this ESG means for you and what you need to do about it.

All seminars commence at 3:00pm, except the Hunter Valley session starts at 2:00pm and the Launceston session starts at 3:30pm.

Having previously held the role of General Counsel, Rachel is responsible for Wine Australia’s strategy development and execution, market insights, external engagement, internal communications, and legal function.
Rachel also has responsibility for Wine Australia’s market access and regulatory functions, including oversight of the Label Integrity Program, maintenance of the Register of Geographical Indications and Other Terms and administration of the export controls. She is also a delegate to the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) and the World Wine Trade Group, a Member of the Presidential Council of FIVS and the President of the Australasian Chapter of the International Wine Law Association.
Prior to joining Wine Australia, Rachel worked in Finlaysons’ Wine Group and, prior to that, as a winemaker, having completed eleven vintages in the Adelaide Hills, Clare Valley, Hunter Valley, Oregon and Tuscany. In 2013, while at Finlaysons, Rachel co-authored 2 key chapters of a text book ‘Global Wine Regulation’.
Rachel has a Bachelor of Science (Jurisprudence) majoring in genetics and biochemistry, a Masters in Oenology, a Bachelor of Laws (University of Adelaide), a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice and a Diploma of European Wine Law (University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne).
Will leads Finlaysons’ Wine Group. His practice has, for about 30 years now, been focused virtually solely on the wine sector. He has extensive experience acting for large and small participants in the wine industry, in relation to mergers and acquisitions, business structures, joint ventures, capital raising, succession planning and their general commercial activities such as entering into supply, processing and distribution contracts and competition and consumer law.
Will has a Bachelor of Economics, Bachelor of Laws and Master of Laws (Companies and Securities) from the University of Adelaide and a Graduate Diploma of Finance and Investment of the Securities Institute of Australia (dux SA Division).
Will acts for wineries all over Australia, large and small, as well as for a number of international wine businesses. He sits on a number of boards and is Chair of Partners of Finlaysons.
Kyra brings valuable industry insight and expertise to her role as head of our Environment, Planning and ESG practice area. She is a vital member of the Finlaysons’ Wine Group.
Kyra’s combination of technical and legal expertise enables her to talk to winemakers, grape growers, viticulturists, wine scientists, managers, regulators and industry consultants in their own language. For Kyra, it’s almost like being bilingual – it’s an invaluable skill that makes it easier to resolve issues for everyone involved.
Kyra sits on the South Australian Wine Industry Association Environment Committee and the Australian Grape & Wine Sustainability Advisory Committee. She has been advising industry about ESG issues for more than a decade.
Kyra has been named as a leading Planning and Environment lawyer in South Australia in Doyle’s Guide to the Australian Legal Profession since 2010. Since 2014, she has been recognised in ‘Best Lawyers Australia’ for her expertise in planning and environmental law. In April 2018 and 2023, based on feedback from industry peers, she was named Lawyer of the Year – Planning & Environmental Law in SA by Best Lawyers Australia.
Lee brings more than 10 years of in-depth experience in agricultural policy, trade and international relations to Australian Grape & Wine. Lee commenced the role of Chief Executive Officer with Australian Grape & Wine on 16 November 2022, after 5 years in the role of General Manager, Government Relations.
Lee is committed to working with Australia’s world-leading grape growers and winemakers to help drive a positive agenda for the sector in the years to come. As an early priority, Lee is in conversations with our members to understand their challenges and opportunities, making sure our team is focusing on the issues that matter most to grape and wine businesses.
